Fair Board Meeting – 4/1/08
Today’s Fair Board was relatively uneventful, as far as the Speedway is concerned. There was supposed to be a presentation about the lease extension, but the person who was going to do that was not there. So there’s still not a lease extension in effect.
Chairman James Weaver did give a report on the status of the consultant’s report. He said that they should have a draft of the report on May 1st, and will discuss that at their May 6th meeting. Since it’ll be a public document, I’ll try to get it and post it here on the site. Originally the consultant had said there would be more public meetings in April, but that’s looking like it’ll be in May instead. When those dates are made available, I’ll be posting those here as well.
As I’ve said in the past, the future of the track at the fairgrounds is still very much in question. The neighborhood activists are making their presence known at each Fair Board meeting. As far as I can tell, I’m the only person there at the Fair Board meetings supporting the track who doesn’t have a financial interest in the track staying. I think if more racing fans started showing up at these meetings, the Fair Board would at least know that there’s still interest in the track.
Another way to show interest in the track is to attend a race. A lot of people want to make this an issue about who’s operating the track (some teams and especially the neighborhood activists); this isn’t about that. If the track makes the Fair Board a lot of money, I believe they’ll be more inclined to keep it around.
I plan on being there this weekend. Are you?
